Micro Macrame Passion Flower: The Story Behind the Design
Some projects begin with a clear idea. Others start with a question that keeps coming back.
My micro macrame Passion Flower began that way.
First, Gloria asked me whether I could create a passion flower in micro macrame. Then I received a similar question on Instagram. When the same idea appeared twice, I became curious. Why this particular flower?
So I looked it up, studied its unusual structure, and thought: this could be an interesting challenge.
From Curiosity to Creation
The passion flower has a wonderfully intricate shape, with layers of delicate filaments surrounding its center and petals arranged in a distinctive pattern. Translating those details into knots and thread was not going to be straightforward.
As usual, the first attempt wasn't the final one. I made several versions, adjusting the design and looking for a way to capture the flower's character.
At one point, I considered simplifying some of the details. But I kept coming back to the same thought: those details were exactly what made the flower so distinctive.
So I decided to keep them.
I'm glad I did. Finding a way to recreate the flower's intricate structure is what made this project so rewarding — and what makes the finished piece special to me.
A Meaning I Discovered Along the Way
Only after completing the flower did I explore its symbolism.
I discovered that the passion flower was used by missionaries as a visual representation of the Passion of Christ. Different parts of the flower were associated with elements of the Passion, including the crown of thorns and the nails.
I hadn't chosen the flower for its religious meaning, and I certainly hadn't planned the project around it. Still, discovering this history added another layer of interest to a design that had begun simply as a creative challenge.
Sometimes, the most interesting details are the ones we discover after the work is done.
Is the Passion Flower a Project for Everyone?
I'll be honest: this project took a lot of time and patience to develop. Once it was finished, I even started wondering whether anyone would actually try to recreate it.
It's certainly not a project for everyone. The level of detail requires some experience with micro macrame, and the process takes time.
Then I saw Sonia's finished flower, followed by Kaiti's work. And Jennifer is working on hers, too.
Seeing other makers take on this intricate design was wonderful — and a lovely answer to the question I'd been asking myself.
That's what makes sharing a project like this so rewarding. It's not about making something quick or easy. It's about exploring what's possible with thread and knots, and discovering what you can create when you're ready to take on a challenge.
Six Videos to Guide You Through the Passion Flower
The finished flower may look intricate, but you don't have to figure out every detail on your own.
I've divided the project into a six-part video tutorial series, available in my Arty Soul Membership Tier on YouTube. Each video guides you through a section of the design, helping you work through the details step by step rather than tackling the entire flower at once.
Breaking the process into smaller sections makes it easier to follow along and focus on one stage at a time.
If you enjoy detailed designs and feel ready to take on a new challenge, I'd love for you to give this flower a try.
