Square Knot for Micro Macrame: Practical Applications
The Square Knot is very versatile and is one of the basic knots in macrame. First of all, it is a flat surface filler, essential for creating strong, symmetrical patterns and can be adapted to many different projects. Here's how to tie it:
Square Knot
Four threads (two working threads, two anchor threads)
Secure the two anchor threads to a stable surface or another stationary object.
Place the two working threads on either side of the anchor threads.
Take the left working thread and cross it over the two anchor threads, forming a loop.
Take the right working thread and place it over the end of the left working thread.
Pass the right working thread under the two anchor threads and up through the loop created by the left working thread.
Pull both working threads to tighten the knot against the anchor threads. This completes the first half of the Square Knot.
Take the right working thread and cross it over the two anchor threads, forming a loop.
Take the left working thread and place it over the end of the right working thread.
Pass the left working thread under the two anchor threads and up through the loop created by the right working thread.
Pull both working threads to tighten the knot against the first half-knot. This completes the second half of the Square Knot.
Continue forming additional Square Knots as needed for your pattern, following the steps above.
By mastering these steps, you can create strong and symmetrical Square Knots, perfect for various macrame projects, bracelet making, and other crafting techniques.
Practical Applications:
Petal and Owl's Head: The Square Knot is used to fill the petals of flowers, creating a dense and structured appearance, and is also employed to shape the owl's head in macramé owl patterns, providing the necessary detail and form.
Creating an Adjustable Closure: Adding an adjustable closure to your bracelet makes it easy to change the fit for comfort. The bracelet ends are often finished with a series of square knots, creating a closure that’s both functional and decorative—this style is commonly known as a sliding knot.
Decorative Elements: In larger wall decor macrame projects, and in items like bookmarks (see photo), the Square Knot can serve as a decorative element, adding visual interest and texture to the design.
